Where does why come from?

The word goes back to Old English 'hwȳ' or 'hwī', which was the instrumental case of 'hwæt', meaning 'what'; the instrumental case answered the question 'by what means?' or 'for what reason?', so 'why' literally meant 'by what'. It belongs to the same Germanic family of question words as 'what', 'who', and 'when', all of which once began with the 'hw' cluster. Over time English flipped that spelling to 'wh', which is why the modern word starts with 'wh' even though the older pronunciation led with the 'h' sound. The final spelling settled on a 'y' to capture the long vowel, leaving a tidy three-letter word with no silent traps. Because it descends directly from native Anglo-Saxon roots rather than a borrowing, it has stayed short and stable for over a thousand years.
