This is a modern compound, coined in the early 1990s alongside the World Wide Web. The 'web' element comes from the Old English webb, meaning a woven fabric or something spun together, the same root that gives us 'weaver' and 'spider's web'; Tim Berners-Lee borrowed that image of interconnected threads when he named the World Wide Web in 1989. The 'page' element travels from the Latin pagina, which originally meant a column of writing or a vine fastened to a trellis, from pangere 'to fasten', and reached English through Old French as the word for one leaf of a book. Joining the two gave 'webpage', a single document of content displayed in a browser. The spelling trap is simply whether to write it as one word, two words ('web page'), or hyphenated; the closed-up form 'webpage' is now the most common.
