Where does video come from?
Language of origin: Latin
The word comes straight from Latin, where video literally means 'I see', the first-person singular form of the verb videre, meaning 'to see'. That same root sits behind a whole family of English words about sight, including 'vision', 'visible', 'evident' and 'provide'. Unlike most Latin borrowings, video is a modern coinage rather than an ancient one: it was assembled in the mid-twentieth century, around the 1930s, as a label for the picture portion of a television signal, deliberately formed to pair with 'audio' (Latin for 'I hear'). From that technical sense it broadened quickly, first to recorded moving images and then to the everyday noun for a film clip or recording. Because the spelling preserves the clean Latin form, it offers no real trap, and the linked words 'vision' and 'evident' are a useful reminder of the 'vid' core.
How the word is built
- vid- (from Latin videre: to see)
- -eo (ending modelled on 'audio')
