This word comes from the Latin verb vertere, meaning 'to turn', through its past participle stem vers-, which gave the medieval Latin noun versio, literally 'a turning'. The earliest English use, borrowed through French in the late 1500s, meant a translation, the act of turning words from one language into another. From there the sense broadened to mean any particular form or account of something, a way of turning the same material into a new shape. The same vers- root turns up in a whole family of relatives such as 'reverse', 'convert', 'divert', and 'verse' (a line that turns back at the end). Knowing the root ends in -vers- helps fix the spelling: it is version, not 'vertion'.
