This is the present participle of the verb 'value', which traces back through Old French to the Latin verb valere, meaning 'to be strong' or 'to be worth'. The Old French noun value was literally the feminine past participle of valoir, 'to be worth', and English took it on in the late 1300s for the worth or merit of a thing. The same valere root gives us a whole family of relatives, including 'valid', 'valour', 'value', and 'evaluate'. When the suffix -ing is added, the silent final e of 'value' is dropped, which is exactly the spelling trap: writers who picture 'value' want to keep that e and produce the incorrect 'valueing'. Remembering the standard rule, that a silent e is dropped before a vowel suffix, keeps the spelling on track.
