This is the past tense of the verb 'type', which traces back through Latin typus to the Greek typos, a noun meaning an impression, a mark, or a figure left by striking something. That Greek root came from typtein, meaning 'to strike or beat', so the original idea was literally the dent or stamp made by a blow. By the 1700s English used 'type' for the small metal blocks of raised letters that printers struck against inked paper, and from there the verb 'type' grew to mean producing text on a typewriter and later a keyboard. The -ed ending is the ordinary English past marker; because the base word already ends in a silent 'e', you simply add 'd', which is why the spelling is 'typed' and not 'typeed'.
