Where does transforming come from?
Language of origin: Latin
This word descends from the Latin transformare, which combined trans, meaning 'across' or 'beyond', with formare, meaning 'to shape', itself built on forma, the word for a shape or form. The literal sense was therefore 'to shape across', that is, to change one shape into another. English took the verb 'transform' through Old French transformer in the late 1300s, and the present participle 'transforming' followed naturally. The same forma root underlies a whole family of everyday English words, including 'uniform', 'reform', and 'platform', so the spelling of the central -form- piece is reassuringly stable. The only real trap is remembering the single s in the trans- prefix and resisting the urge to double it.
How the word is built
- trans- (across, beyond)
- form (shape)
- -ing (present participle suffix)
