Together comes from the Old English togædere, which combined tō, meaning 'to' or 'towards', with gædere, meaning 'in a group' or 'gathered'. That second element is directly related to the verb gather and to the word good in its older sense of bringing things into a fitting union. The whole expression literally pictured separate things being drawn into one place or one company. It has been part of English since well before the Norman Conquest, and the spelling settled with the modern -gether ending over the Middle English period. The hidden link with gather is worth remembering, because the trap in together is the unstressed middle vowel, which is spelled with an e, just as in gather.
