Therein is a native English compound that has been in continuous use since the Old English period, where it appeared as 'thaerin', joining the locative adverb 'thaer' (meaning 'in that place', the ancestor of modern 'there') with the preposition 'in'. Both parts descend from the Germanic family of words, and the same 'thaer' element survives in a whole cluster of formal adverbs such as thereof, thereby, thereafter, and thereupon. The literal sense was 'in that place', but over the centuries it broadened to mean 'in that document, matter, or respect', which is why it survives mainly in legal, contractual, and scholarly writing. The spelling is simply the two familiar pieces fused together, so the trap is resisting the urge to insert a space or to drop one of the letters where 'there' meets 'in'. Because it is built transparently from 'there', the e-r-e sequence carries straight over into the compound.
