The base verb 'stroll' arrived in English in the early 1600s from a German dialect word, 'strollen' (also seen as 'strolchen'), which meant to roam or wander about as a vagrant. That verb in turn came from 'Strolch', a German noun for a vagabond, tramp, or itinerant fortune-teller, so the earliest sense carried a whiff of aimless, idle wandering rather than the pleasant leisure walk we mean today. Over time the disreputable edge fell away and 'stroll' settled into its modern meaning of an easy, unhurried walk. Adding the agent suffix '-er' first produced 'stroller' for a person who strolls, and by the nineteenth century the same word was applied to the small wheeled chair in which a child is pushed along on just such a walk. The spelling keeps the double 'l' of 'stroll' before the suffix, which is the detail writers most often second-guess.
