Where does saturday come from?
Language of origin: Latin
This is one of the few English day names that kept its Roman rather than Norse origin. It comes from the Old English Sæternesdæg, which meant literally 'the day of Saturn', a direct translation of the Latin Saturni dies. Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture and of plenty, and the Romans had named the day after him in their planetary week. While the other weekdays in English were re-dedicated to Germanic gods (Woden, Thunor, Frig), Saturday alone kept its Latin patron, which is why it does not match Norse cousins like the Scandinavian 'lördag'. That buried name Saturn is exactly the spelling cue worth holding onto: the middle is 'satur', not 'sater', because Saturn lives inside the word.
How the word is built
- satur- (from Latin Saturnus, the god Saturn)
- -day (Old English dæg, day)
