That noun was built on the verb reponere, formed from re- 'back' and ponere 'to place or put', so the literal idea was something put back and kept safe. English picked it up in the early 1400s, borrowing it through Latin and partly through French, first for any container or chamber where goods, documents, or relics were stored. The same ponere root sits inside a whole family of English words, including deposit, position, and compose, which all share the sense of placing or putting. Knowing that the middle is 'posit', the same chunk as in 'deposit', helps fix the single s and the i before the -tory ending.
