In English it began as student slang in the 1800s as a shortening of quadrangle, the four-sided open courtyard found at colleges and universities, with quadrangle itself built from quadr- (four) and angulus (corner or angle). Over time the same handy syllable came to stand in for other quad- words: a quadruplet (one of four siblings born together), the quadriceps muscle at the front of the thigh, and later the four-wheeled quad bike. Because it simply lops the front off whatever longer word is meant, quad carries no suffix of its own, which is why its spelling stays blunt and unchanged.
