The word comes from the Greek problema, which literally meant 'a thing thrown or put forward', built from pro 'forward' and ballein 'to throw'. In Greek it described a question or task put before someone to be solved, as well as an obstacle placed in one's path. Latin took it as problema, and English borrowed it through Old French and Latin in the late 1300s, first in the sense of a riddle or scientific question. Over time the meaning broadened from a posed academic puzzle to any difficulty or source of trouble. The very same ballein root still throws its weight around in words like 'emblem', 'symbol', and 'parable', all of which involve something cast or set down.
