The base word partner reached English in the 1300s as partener, an altered form of the earlier parcener, which meant a joint heir or co-owner. That came through Old French parçonier from parçon, meaning a share or partition, which traces back to the Latin partitio, 'a dividing or sharing out', itself from pars, 'a part'. Because the idea was always about sharing a portion, English speakers reshaped the spelling under the pull of the familiar word part, which is why we write partner rather than parcener today. The inflected form partnered simply adds the regular -ed ending to mark the past tense or the participle, and it doubles no consonant because the stress falls on the first syllable. Knowing that part hides inside the word is the easiest way to keep the spelling on track.
