Where does partake come from?
Language of origin: Latin
Partake is a back-formation from the older noun partaker, which in Middle English was written as 'part-taker', literally 'one who takes a part or share'. That compound was coined to translate the Latin particeps, meaning 'sharing in' or 'participating', from pars 'part' and capere 'to take'. By the 1500s English speakers had trimmed partaker down to the verb partake, meaning to take a share in something, especially in a meal, an activity, or an experience. The 'take' element keeps the literal sense vivid: to partake is quite plainly to take part. Because the word is simply part plus take welded together, it carries no silent letters or doubled consonants, which is why it stays easy to spell once the join is seen.
