The word traces back to the Latin palatium, the name of the Palatine Hill in Rome where the emperor Augustus and later rulers built their grand residences. Because the imperial home stood on that hill, the hill's name itself came to mean a great or official dwelling. The term passed into Old French as palais and arrived in English in the 1200s. The same Roman root also gave us 'palatial' (meaning grand or spacious) and even, by a long chain, the word 'paladin'. The spelling trap is the unstressed second syllable, where the schwa sound tempts writers toward '-ice' or '-ase', when the correct ending is simply '-ace'.
