Where does ones come from?

This is simply the plural of the word 'one', which comes from the Old English an, meaning 'a single thing' and the source of the indefinite article 'a' and 'an' as well. The Old English an traces back to a shared ancestor in Proto-Germanic and ultimately the same root that gave Latin unus and Greek oine (the single pip on a die), so the idea of singularity runs right across the European languages. Curiously, the modern 'w' sound at the front (as in 'won') is a later spoken habit that crept in during the 1400s and 1500s; the spelling never caught up, which is why 'one' looks nothing like it sounds. When 'one' is used as a stand-in noun, such as 'the small ones', it takes an ordinary plural -s, giving 'ones'. The whole spelling trap is that this plural has no apostrophe, unlike the possessive 'one's' or the contraction 'one's' (one is), which do.
