Where does negotiation come from?
Language of origin: Latin
The word traces back to the Latin negotium, which literally meant 'business' or 'occupation' and was formed from neg-, meaning 'not', plus otium, meaning 'leisure' or 'ease'. In other words, a Roman thought of business as quite literally 'not leisure', the absence of free time. From negotium came the verb negotiari, 'to carry on business or trade', and its noun negotiatio, 'the conducting of business'. English took the word in through French and Latin during the sixteenth century, at first meaning trading or dealing, and only later narrowing toward the modern sense of bargaining to reach an agreement. Remembering that hidden 'oti' from otium ('leisure') can help fix the tricky middle of the spelling, where the 'ti' is pronounced like 'shi'.
How the word is built
- negoti- (from Latin negotium: business, dealing)
- -ation (noun suffix denoting an action or process)
