Money comes from the Latin moneta, which meant a mint or the coins struck there, and ultimately the act of coining itself. The name has a striking backstory: moneta was a title of the Roman goddess Juno, and the chief Roman mint stood beside her temple on the Capitoline Hill, so coins minted there came to carry her name. The Latin word passed into Old French as moneie before entering English in the 1200s, and the same moneta root gave us the related word 'mint'. The modern English spelling keeps the soft 'o' sound spelled with an unexpected 'o' rather than 'u', a leftover of medieval French spelling habits that can briefly trip up writers. The plural 'monies' (or 'moneys') survives in legal and accounting language, but the everyday word stays comfortably singular.
