It was a direct rendering of the Latin phrase dies Lunae, 'day of the moon', which the Romans had used as part of their planetary week. The Old English mona meant 'moon' and dæg meant 'day', and the two simply fused over centuries of use into the single word we now write. The same lunar root survives openly in the modern word 'moon' itself, which is why the spelling keeps an 'o' rather than the 'u' sound many speakers expect to hear.
