Where does mix come from?
Language of origin: Latin
The word mix traces back to the Latin verb miscere, meaning 'to blend or combine', and its past participle mixtus, meaning 'mixed'. English first developed the adjective and noun 'mixt' from this Latin source in the late medieval period, and the verb 'mix' appears to have been formed afterwards by back-formation from that adjective in the 1500s. The same Latin root sits behind a whole family of relatives, including 'mixture', 'miscellaneous', and even 'promiscuous', all of which share the sense of things blended together. Because the word is short and entirely phonetic, the spelling is straightforward, and the only point worth noticing is that the blended /ks/ sound at the end is written with a single letter x rather than the 'cks' that catches people out in longer words.
