That word goes back to a Germanic root and is related to similar forms across the Germanic languages, all carrying the idea of small weight or brightness. The trimmed spelling lite was coined in twentieth-century advertising, chiefly in the United States, to label products that were reduced in calories, fat, alcohol, or strength, the most famous early example being light beer marketed as 'lite'. Manufacturers liked the snappier four-letter form because it looked distinctive on packaging and sidestepped the heavier connotations of the full word. By extension it now also tags any cut-down or simplified version of a product, especially software.
