The word arrived in English in the seventeenth century from French limonade, which was simply the French word for a drink made from lemons, built on limon meaning 'lemon'. That French limon traces back through Italian limone to Arabic laymun and ultimately to Persian and earlier Sanskrit terms for the citrus fruit, reflecting how lemons travelled westward along trade routes. The handy suffix -ade, which the French used for fruit drinks, has since spread to other English coinages such as 'orangeade' and 'limeade'. The English spelling smooths the French limon- back toward the familiar English word lemon, so the trap is mostly the unstressed middle vowel: it is lemon plus -ade, not 'limon'.
