It was formed from the prefix in-, meaning 'in' or 'into', combined with the verb claudere, which literally meant 'to close' or 'to shut'. The original idea was physical: to shut something inside a space, the same image that survives in 'enclose' and in a prison's 'enclosure'. By the time English borrowed the word in the fifteenth century, the sense had softened from literally shutting something in to the figurative meaning of containing or comprising something as part of a whole. The same claudere root hides inside many relatives such as 'conclude', 'exclude', and 'seclude', which is a useful reminder that the spelling keeps a 'clud' core, not a 'clood' or 'cluid'.
