Where does how's come from?
Language of origin: Germanic
This is a contraction of 'how is' or 'how has', combining the question word 'how' with a clipped form of the verb. 'How' comes from Old English 'hu', a native Germanic interrogative adverb meaning 'in what way' or 'by what means', closely related to the words 'who' and 'what'. The little 's' on the end stands in for either 'is' or 'has', with the apostrophe marking the dropped letters, a practice that became common in written English from the seventeenth century onward as informal contractions gained acceptance in print. The spelling trap is entirely the apostrophe: writers know the sound but hesitate over where the mark goes, and the form is easily confused with the plural-looking 'hows' (as in 'the hows and whys'), which carries no apostrophe at all.
