From fabrica came the verb fabricari, meaning to construct or build with skill, and its past participle fabricatus. English adopted the verb 'fabricate' in the sixteenth century with the literal sense of building or manufacturing something. Over time a second, darker meaning developed: just as one can assemble an object piece by piece, one can also assemble a false story, so 'fabricate' came to mean inventing a lie.
