This is the past tense of 'enrol', which English took from the Old French verb enroller in the late 1300s. That word was built from en-, meaning 'in' or 'on', and rolle, a 'roll' or 'scroll', because the names of people admitted to a guild, an army, or a court were literally written onto a parchment roll. So to be enrolled was originally to have your name added to such a roll of members. The same rolle ancestor, which traces back to the Latin rotulus, a 'little wheel' or 'cylinder' of parchment, also gives us the everyday word 'roll'. A useful spelling note: British 'enrol' keeps a single l, yet when the ending is added the l doubles in every dialect, giving 'enrolled' on both sides of the Atlantic.
