Where does dreamer come from?
Language of origin: Germanic
This word is built on the noun and verb 'dream', which comes from the Old English drēam. Curiously, in early Old English drēam usually meant 'joy', 'mirth', or 'music' rather than sleeping visions, and the sense of a vision seen while asleep was probably reinforced by related Germanic words such as Old Norse draumr and Dutch droom, which already carried that meaning. By the Middle English period the modern 'sleeping vision' sense had settled in, and the figurative sense of a fanciful or unrealistic notion followed naturally. The agent suffix '-er', also native Germanic, turns 'dream' into 'dreamer', literally 'one who dreams'. The spelling is comfortably phonetic for adults, with the only mild snag being the silent 'a' in the 'ea' vowel team carried over from 'dream'.
How the word is built

- -er (agent suffix: one who does)
