Where does doorway come from?
Language of origin: Germanic
This is a transparent native English compound, joining two old Germanic words. 'Door' descends from Old English 'duru' and 'dor', which referred to the gate or large entrance of a building, and it has cousins across the Germanic languages, including German 'Tür' and Dutch 'deur'. 'Way' comes from Old English 'weg', meaning a path, road, or course of travel, related to the verb 'to wend' and to the idea of movement. The two were welded together to name the opening through which one passes when a door stands in the frame. Because both halves are common, everyday words, the spelling is refreshingly regular: the only thing to remember is the doubled 'oo' in 'door' carried straight into the compound.
