This is the plural of 'door', which descends from Old English 'duru', meaning a gate or large entrance, alongside the related neuter form 'dor'. The root reaches far back into Proto-Germanic 'duruz' and on to a shared Indo-European source, which is why German still has 'Tür' and Dutch has 'deur' for the same thing. The classical languages preserve cousins of the same ancient root in Latin 'foris' and Greek 'thura', both meaning a door. Across the centuries the two Old English forms collapsed into the single modern word, and the plural is formed in the ordinary way by adding -s. The spelling keeps the double 'o' that represents the long vowel, which is the only mild snag for a fast writer, since the word otherwise behaves predictably.
