Creation comes from the Latin creatio, a noun built on the verb creare, which meant 'to make, bring forth, or produce'. The same creare gives us 'create' and 'creature', and even 'crescent', through the related idea of growing and coming into being. The word passed into English through Old French creacion during the 1300s, at first carrying a strongly religious sense of the universe being brought into existence. Over time the meaning broadened to cover anything that has been made or originated, from a work of art to a new recipe. The spelling keeps the Latin -atio ending in its English form -ation, where the 'ti' is pronounced 'sh', which is the small trap for writers who might reach for an 's'.
