The word 'could' descends from the Old English cuthe, the past tense of cunnan, meaning 'to know how to' or 'to be able'. Originally it had no 'l' at all and was spelled 'coude' or 'cou(t)he' in Middle English. The intrusive 'l' was inserted by scribes during the 1500s purely by analogy with 'would' and 'should', where the 'l' genuinely belonged because those forms came from words that contained it. This makes 'could' a curious case where the spelling was deliberately reshaped to match its modal cousins, even though the letter was never pronounced and never historically present. The same cunnan root also gives us the modern verb 'can', as well as the words 'cunning' and 'uncouth', all tied to the old idea of knowing or being able.
