The word comes from the Latin kalendarium, which originally meant an account book or moneylender's ledger. That name grew from kalendae (also spelled calendae), the word for the calends, the first day of each Roman month, because debts and interest fell due on that day and were recorded then. The verb behind it, calare, meant 'to call out' or 'proclaim', since priests publicly announced the start of the new month. English took the word in the 1200s through Old French calendier, and over time it shifted from a record of payment dates to any system that orders the days, weeks, and months of the year. The original a in kalendae is exactly why the modern spelling ends in -ar rather than the -er that the pronunciation tempts writers toward.
