Where does blogging come from?

This word grew out of 'weblog', a term coined in 1997 to describe a website kept as a running online journal or 'log'. Within a couple of years the playful clipping 'blog' had taken hold, and from that noun English quickly built the verb 'to blog', meaning to write entries for such a site. 'Blogging' is the present participle and gerund of that verb, formed by doubling the final 'g' before adding '-ing', the regular pattern for a short word ending in a single stressed vowel plus consonant (compare 'jogging' and 'logging'). The deeper roots are humble and Germanic: 'log' originally meant a heavy block of wood, then the wooden float sailors trailed behind a ship to measure its speed, then the journal in which those readings were recorded, which is how 'log' came to mean any methodical record. So 'blogging' is, quite literally, keeping a record on the web, and the doubled 'g' is the only real spelling trap.
