It begins with 'weblog', a compound joining 'web' (from the World Wide Web) and 'log', the old nautical and record-keeping word for a running written account of events. Around 1999 the playful clipping 'we blog' helped shorten 'weblog' to simply 'blog', meaning a regularly updated online journal or commentary site. From 'blog' English formed 'blogger' with the familiar agent suffix '-er', naming the person who keeps such a site, and the single g of 'blog' doubles to 'gg' so the vowel stays short, the same pattern seen in 'jog' becoming 'jogger'.
