Blog is a modern coinage, a shortening of weblog, which itself joined web (from World Wide Web) with log, the old word for a regular written record such as a ship's logbook. The longer form weblog was coined in 1997 to describe a personal website on which someone logged their thoughts, links, and diary entries in reverse chronological order. The clipped form blog appeared around 1999 when a writer jokingly split weblog as 'we blog', and the snappier single syllable quickly took over. Because both word and concept were born on the internet, the spelling is refreshingly simple and phonetic, with none of the silent letters or doubled consonants that trip up older words. It soon spawned its own family, including blogger, blogging, and the collective blogosphere.
