Where does battled come from?
Language of origin: French
This is the past tense of the verb 'battle', which English took from the Old French 'bataille', meaning a fight or combat. That French word grew out of the Late Latin 'battualia', the term for military or gladiatorial fencing exercises, itself from the Latin verb 'battuere', meaning 'to beat' or 'to strike'. English adopted 'battle' in the 1200s, first as a noun for an armed clash and soon afterward as a verb meaning to fight or struggle. The same humble 'battuere' root, simply meaning to hit something, also underlies everyday words such as 'batter', 'combat', and 'battery'. The spelling trap in 'battled' is the doubled t carried over from 'battle' plus the regular '-ed' ending added to a word that already finishes in a silent e.
How the word is built
- battl- (battle, from Latin battuere: to beat, strike)
- -ed (past-tense suffix)
