This is the past form of 'archive', a word that traces back to the Greek arkheion, the public building where official records and government documents were kept. That noun grew out of arkhe, meaning 'government', 'rule', or 'beginning', the same root that gives us words like 'monarch' and 'anarchy'. The Greek term passed into Latin as archivum (also written archium), then into French as the plural archives, the form English borrowed in the early 1600s to mean a place where historical records are stored. The verb sense, meaning to file something away for safekeeping, became common much later, and the digital era turned 'archive' into an everyday computing term.
