Latin passed the word into Old French as 'angle', and English adopted it in the early 1300s to describe the space formed where two lines or surfaces meet. A separate but identical-looking 'angle' meaning 'to fish' comes from the Old English 'angul', a fishhook, and survives in 'angler'; the two senses have long shared the same spelling.
