This word comes from Old English andlang, a compound built from the prefix and-, meaning 'against' or 'facing', and lang, the ordinary word for 'long'. The literal sense was something running the whole length of a thing, so to go andlang a road was to follow its full extent. Over the centuries the heavy and- prefix wore down to a simple a-, leaving the modern shape 'along', and the meaning broadened from physical length to ideas like company ('come along') and progress ('getting along'). The same lang root sits inside 'long', 'length', and 'belong', all native Germanic words. Because the spelling is short, regular, and phonetic, the trap is minimal: the only real slip is writing the single l-o-n-g sound after a clear schwa at the start.
