Where does advice come from?
Language of origin: French
This word came into English around 1300 from the Old French 'avis', meaning an opinion or a view. That French noun grew out of the Latin phrase 'mihi est visum', literally 'it seems to me' or 'it is seen by me', built on 'videre', the verb 'to see'. So the core idea is that advice is what someone else sees about your situation: their considered view. English later restored the 'd' to mirror Latin spellings beginning 'ad-', meaning 'to', which is why we now write 'advice' rather than the older 'avis'. The crucial spelling trap is the ending: the noun 'advice' takes a 'c' and rhymes with 'ice', while the verb 'advise' takes an 's' and rhymes with 'wise', a pairing that exactly parallels 'device' and 'devise'.
