Where does accordance come from?
Language of origin: Latin
The word traces back to the Latin cor, meaning 'heart', through its stem cord-. Medieval Latin formed the verb accordare, literally 'to bring heart to heart', that is, to bring people or things into agreement. Old French took this up as acorder, and English borrowed the noun form in the 1300s, originally spelled with a single c. The underlying idea is wonderfully concrete: when two parties are 'of one heart', they are in accord, and the same cor root still beats inside 'cordial', 'concord', and 'record'. The doubled c and the -ance ending are the spelling traps, both inherited from the Latin prefix ad- assimilating before the c.
How the word is built
- ac- (to, from Latin ad-)
- cord (heart, from Latin cor)
- -ance (noun-forming suffix)
