Where does accomplish come from?
Language of origin: French
This word travelled into English from the Old French verb acomplir, which meant 'to complete' or 'to carry out fully'. That French form rested on the Latin verb complere, built from the prefix com- meaning 'completely' or 'together' and the root plere, which literally meant 'to fill'. So to accomplish something was, at heart, to fill it up to the brim, to leave nothing of the task undone. English adopted the word in the late 1300s, and the familiar -ish ending arose from the way Old French conjugated this class of verbs (the -iss- stem you also see in 'finish' and 'cherish'). The same plere root quietly fills out relatives such as 'complete', 'replete' and 'plenty', and remembering that buried 'fill' idea helps explain the doubled c yet single m and single p that trip writers up.
How the word is built
- ac- (to, assimilated form of ad-)
- com- (completely)
- pl (fill, from Latin plere)
- -ish (verb-forming ending from Old French)
